Being web-based, CiscoView allows access from any client with a standard browser, network
access, and minimum hardware requirements. CiscoView is installed when Common Services
is installed.
The CiscoView application depends heavily on device packages and Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP). Device packages are the key to making CiscoView work with
specific Cisco devices. The device packages provide CiscoView with the graphical layout of
the device type, the Management Information Base (MIB) structure in a device, and the
definitions for modules, submodules, and ports in a device. Basically, the device packages tell
CiscoView how to talk to the device, how to illustrate the device graphically, and add specific
functions to CiscoView based on the device type. You can update and add additional device
packages to CiscoView by choosing Common Services > Software Center> Device Update.
Using the MIB structure defined in the device package, CiscoView can poll the MIB in a Cisco
device to monitor the device real-time, or view and change the configuration of the device.
